I've talked to hundreds of small business owners across Toledo, Perrysburg, Findlay, Bowling Green, and the surrounding area. And one pattern shows up constantly: they've already been burned by an agency before they find us.
Wasted $800/month for six months. No reporting. Posts that looked nothing like their brand. Zero new leads. Sometimes a contract they couldn't get out of.
Most of these were avoidable â if they'd known what to look for. This post is your field guide. Seven problems we see over and over, the questions you can ask upfront, and what a legitimate agency should be able to answer without hesitation.
Quick note on the price question
If you haven't already, read our breakdown of what social media marketing actually costs in Northwest Ohio in 2026. Understanding price tiers will help you spot when something's too good â or too expensive â to be real.
Problem #1: They Post, But Nothing Happens
Activity without accountability
The agency posts 3â5 times a week. The feed looks busy. But three months in, you can't name a single lead that came from social media. When you ask, they show you follower counts and likes â not calls, not form fills, not revenue.
Posting is not a strategy. It's the execution of a strategy. If there's no clear goal â more appointments, more calls, more product sales â the posts are just decoration.
Ask this upfront: "What does success look like in 90 days, and how will you track it?"
Problem #2: The Content Feels Generic
Copy-paste content with your logo slapped on it
You've seen these posts. "Happy Friday! What are your weekend plans? ð" or stock photos of people shaking hands with your business name in the corner. This is what happens when an agency is managing 40 clients with a junior content coordinator and a template library.
For local businesses in Northwest Ohio, your content needs to be yours â your crew, your trucks, your actual jobs, your real customer stories. Generic content doesn't build trust, and trust is the only thing that makes people pick up the phone.
Ask this upfront: "Can I see examples of content you've created for a business similar to mine? Who actually writes the captions?"
Problem #3: No One Picks Up the Phone
Great onboarding, then radio silence
The sales call was smooth. The onboarding was polished. Then your "account manager" changed twice in three months, emails take four days to get a response, and you're not even sure anyone is actively thinking about your account.
This is the most common complaint we hear. Big agencies promise senior strategy but deliver junior execution. When you're a $1,000/month client at a $500k/month agency, you're not their priority.
Ask this upfront: "Who is my main point of contact, and what's your typical response time? Can I talk to a current client who's been with you more than a year?"
Problem #4: Locked into a Contract You Can't Escape
12-month agreements with no performance clauses
Some agencies lead with a 6- or 12-month contract before they've proven a single result. That's a massive risk transfer onto you â the business owner. Legitimate agencies are confident enough in their work to earn your continued business month over month.
Long contracts aren't always a dealbreaker, but any contract should include clear deliverables, performance benchmarks, and a reasonable exit clause if those benchmarks aren't met.
Ask this upfront: "What happens if I'm unhappy after 90 days? What's your cancellation policy?"
Problem #5: You Have No Idea What You're Paying For
Vague scope, no deliverables list
Your invoice says "$1,200/month â Social Media Management." That's it. You don't know if that includes ads spend management or just organic. You don't know how many posts. You don't know if someone's monitoring your comments or just scheduling content. You assumed strategy was included â it wasn't.
Every dollar you spend on marketing should map to something specific. Our pricing page shows exactly what's included at every level â number of posts, platforms, ad management, reporting, and strategy calls. That's what a clear scope looks like.
Ask this upfront: "Can you give me a written breakdown of exactly what's included each month?"
Problem #6: They Don't Know Your Industry
A one-size-fits-all approach to totally different businesses
A landscaping company and a chiropractic office have completely different customers, different trust barriers, and different reasons someone picks up the phone. An agency that treats them the same way will produce mediocre results for both.
We've built out industry-specific approaches for the businesses we work with most in NW Ohio â landscapers, plumbers, electricians, chiropractors, and financial advisors. The strategy, the content style, the CTA â all different because the buyer is different.
Ask this upfront: "Have you worked with businesses in my specific industry? What's different about your approach for us?"
Problem #7: No Reporting, or Reporting That Means Nothing
Vanity metrics presented as wins
Your monthly report shows your reach went up 22% and you got 400 new profile visits. Sounds good. But did any of those people call you? Did anyone book an appointment? Did revenue move?
Reach, impressions, and follower count are all inputs â they only matter if they lead to outputs. A good agency connects social performance to actual business outcomes and shows you the full picture, even when the numbers aren't pretty.
Ask this upfront: "Can I see a sample monthly report? What metrics do you track beyond reach and impressions?"
So What Should You Actually Look For?
Here's the short version of what a legitimate local social media partner looks like:
- Clear scope in writing â number of posts, platforms, what's included, what costs extra
- Transparent pricing â no "book a call to find out" for basic questions
- Industry-specific experience â they should know your customer type, not just social media in general
- A real human point of contact â someone you can text or call who knows your account
- Month-to-month flexibility or at minimum a performance clause if they want a longer commitment
- Reporting tied to business outcomes â leads, calls, appointments â not just vanity metrics
- Real content â photos and video of your actual business, not stock templates
