If you can’t comment on YouTube videos, first check whether it happens on one video or everywhere. A creator can turn comments off, pause them, or limit who can comment. Private videos don’t have comments. If the problem follows you across videos, check your sign-in and account settings before changing anything on your own channel.
Why can I comment on some videos but not this one?
Comments are controlled by the person who posted the video. They may be off, paused, or limited to subscribers and members. A creator can also require someone to subscribe for a minimum amount of time before commenting.
Video privacy matters too. YouTube doesn’t offer comments on private videos. Unlisted videos can have comments, though anyone with the link may be able to view and share the video. If the comment area is missing on just one upload, this is the first place to look.
If it’s your own video, check YouTube Studio. Our guide shows how to turn on comments for a YouTube video and what to check when the option isn’t available.
Why can’t I comment on any YouTube video?
Make sure you’re signed in to the right Google account. You can view comments while signed out, but you need to sign in to post one. If you’ve never used a YouTube channel with that account, YouTube may create one when you comment.
Then test a few public videos. If the same problem happens across them, try the same account in another browser or on another device. Check whether a supervised account, Restricted Mode, or a school or work network could be limiting what you can do. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what fixed it.
Why can’t I comment on my own video?
Open the video in YouTube Studio and review its audience and comment settings. Comments may be unavailable when a video is designated as made for kids, when it’s private, or when YouTube has disabled them for safety. Don’t change the audience setting just to make comments appear. It needs to describe the video accurately.
For a video where comments are allowed, the creator can choose On, Pause, or Off. With comments on, moderation can still hold some submissions for review. The setting may be different on each video, so check the affected upload instead of assuming a channel-wide default changed it.
Could my comment be waiting for review?
Yes. A comment can be held by the creator’s moderation settings, including filters for certain words or links. Held comments aren’t public unless the channel owner approves them. If you own the channel, open the comments area in YouTube Studio and check the Held tab.
If you’re commenting on someone else’s video, you may not be able to see whether the creator is reviewing it. Give it a little time, then check whether it appears while signed in. Avoid posting the same comment again and again. That can make the situation harder to sort out.
What should I try first when YouTube comments won’t work?
Start with a public video where comments are clearly available. Confirm you’re signed in, then try a short comment without a link. If that works, the original video’s settings or a link filter may be the reason. If it doesn’t, try another browser or device with the same account.
For your own upload, check the specific video’s audience and comment controls in Studio. If YouTube displays a warning or says commenting is paused for your account, read that notice and follow the steps it gives you. Repeatedly switching settings won’t clear an account restriction.
How can a business use its YouTube comments?
Comments can show what a potential customer still needs to know. Answer service-area questions plainly. If someone asks for personal details, move that part of the conversation to a private channel instead of asking them to post it in public.
Set a regular time to check new comments and held items. If video publishing and replies keep slipping, take a look at our social media and content support for local businesses. A simple response routine is useful only when someone owns it.
