To turn off Active Status on Facebook, open Menu, Settings & Privacy, Settings, then find Active Status under Audience and visibility. Switch off Show when you're active. Check Messenger separately too. Turning it off in Facebook alone can leave you showing as active somewhere else.
You can check your business's posts without wanting a conversation right then. This setting gives you some room, but it helps to know which account and app you're changing before you start.
How do I turn off Active Status in the Facebook app?
Open the Facebook menu and follow the settings path above. Make sure you're on the profile you mean to change, especially if you switch between accounts for work.
Meta's Facebook app instructions put the control under Audience and visibility. Look for the setting name rather than relying on where a menu icon sat in an older screenshot. If your screen differs, choose your device in that Help Center article.
How do I turn it off on a computer?
On Facebook's website, open the Messenger icon, then Options beside Chats. Open the Active Status control, switch it off, and click Save. These are the steps in Meta's computer instructions.
Don't stop at moving the switch if the window still has a Save button waiting for you.
How do I turn off Active Status in Messenger?
In Messenger, open Menu, then Settings and Active status. Turn off the control beside Show when you're active.
The last step depends on your phone. Meta's current iPhone instructions say to confirm with Turn off. Its Android instructions say to choose how long to pause the status, then tap Pause. Read that duration before confirming so you know when the setting might change back.
For messenger.com, Meta lists profile picture, Preferences, Active status, followed by the toggle and Save. Its Messenger Active Status guide has a device selector for each version.
Why do I still look active after turning it off?
Check the other places where you're signed in. You might have changed Facebook on your phone while leaving Messenger on a laptop unchanged. Meta says to turn the setting off wherever you're using either service.
There can also be a delay in the indicator. If the problem continues, Meta's explanation of Active Status recommends reopening the Facebook app, updating it, or checking your internet connection. A status timestamp alone isn't a reliable way to decide whether someone is available to answer you.
Will turning it off stop my messages?
No. Meta confirms that messages still reach your chats when Active Status is off. You can read them later. Switching off the indicator doesn't take the responsibility for customer replies off your plate.
If you're the person answering messages for a Toledo business, decide when you'll check them. Put that time on your calendar. And if another person covers the inbox, agree on who handles a conversation so the customer doesn't get two conflicting answers.
Why does a business Page still have a green dot?
Meta explains that a Page's indicator works differently from a person's Active Status. Recent Page activity or a history of quick replies can produce that dot. Your personal setting won't necessarily make the Page's dot disappear.
That distinction matters if you're troubleshooting the business account while looking at your own profile settings. Check which one the customer is actually seeing before changing anything else.

Common questions
Do I need to turn it off in Messenger too?
Yes. Check both apps and every place you use them. Changing one setting can leave your status visible elsewhere.
Will I still receive messages?
Yes. Messages still arrive, so you can read them when you're ready.
Why can't I see when my friends are online?
Turning your own Active Status off also hides other people's Active Status from you.
Can I turn Active Status back on later?
Yes. Return to the same setting and switch it on. Save or confirm the change when prompted.
Does my Facebook Page's green dot show my personal status?
No. Meta treats the Page indicator differently. A Page can show a green dot based on recent activity or its history of responding quickly.
