Short answer: your TikTok video is under review because moderation flagged it before it went out to the For You feed. That flag comes from one of four places most of the time. Something in the video or caption brushed a community guideline, you used a hashtag or phrase TikTok treats as risky, the video looks like AI content that was not labeled, or a viewer reported it. Most reviews clear in a few minutes. TikTok says it can take up to 48 hours.

The part that drives people nuts is that TikTok almost never tells you which one it was. You just get the banner and then you sit there refreshing.

What does "under review" actually mean on TikTok?

Every video you post runs through automated moderation before it gets real distribution. Most of the time that check happens so fast you never see it. When something trips the system, the video gets held and either a machine takes a second pass or a human looks at it.

While it sits there, the video is live on your profile but it is not being pushed to anybody. Your view count can freeze at zero or at some tiny number and stay there. That is normal for a video in the queue and it is not proof you got banned.

Why did TikTok flag my video?

Here are the triggers I see over and over with business accounts.

Guideline stuff is the obvious one. Blood, injuries, weapons, anything that reads as dangerous, anything medical or financial that sounds like a claim. Contractors and med spas get caught in this a lot because a wound care clip or a demo with a power tool looks like harm to a machine that cannot tell context.

Then there is the caption and hashtag side. Certain words and tags are watched closely, and some are effectively banned even though TikTok never publishes a list. If you tagged something trendy without checking it, that alone can hold the video.

AI content is a newer one. If your clip has AI generated visuals or voice and you did not toggle the AI generated label, TikTok's detection can catch it and hold the video while it sorts out whether it is labeled correctly. Turn the label on yourself and you skip that whole fight.

And then there are reports. One competitor or one annoyed viewer tapping report is enough to put a perfectly fine video in front of a reviewer. Nothing you did wrong, you just wait it out.

How long should I wait before I do anything?

Give it 24 hours before you touch it. I know that is painful when you posted something timely, but deleting and reposting inside the first hour is the most common mistake, and it usually makes things worse.

If it is past 48 hours and still sitting there, something is stuck. At that point you can delete it, fix whatever you think the trigger was, and post a clean version. If it got removed instead of approved, appeal it from the notification. Appeals do get reversed.

Should I delete a video that is under review?

Only if you know what you would change. Reposting the same file gets you the same flag, and now you have two strikes against the same content instead of one.

What actually works is going through the video like a reviewer would. Read the caption out loud. Look at the first two seconds. Check the audio, since a lot of holds are about music rights on a business account, not the video at all. We covered that side of it in the piece on why business accounts lose access to popular music, and the same logic applies here.

Why are all of my videos going under review now?

This is a different problem. One video in review is a content issue. Every video in review is an account issue.

Usually it means you have picked up strikes, or your account looks suspicious to TikTok for some reason. Logging in from a new country, running a bunch of posts through a third party scheduler in a burst, or losing an appeal recently can all put your account in a tighter lane where everything gets checked.

Open your account status in the app and read it. Then slow your posting down for a week or two and stay boring. It does clear. If your views tanked along with it, the causes overlap with what I wrote about TikTok videos getting no views.

How do I stop this from happening every time?

Label AI content yourself. Check a hashtag before you use it instead of grabbing whatever is trending. Keep the commercial sound library on if you are a business account. Do not post six videos in twenty minutes.

Past that, the honest answer is that some amount of this is just the cost of posting on TikTok. Moderation is automated at a scale nobody can hand check, and it gets things wrong in both directions. Plan for a video to occasionally sit for a day and do not build a promotion where one clip has to land at 9am sharp.

If you are running a business and the whole thing has turned into a guessing game, that is the part we take off people's plates. You can see how we handle it on our social media management services page, or just book a call and we will look at your account together.

Common questions

How long does a TikTok video stay under review?
Most clear in a few minutes. Some sit for a few hours, and TikTok says it can stretch to 48 hours when the queue is backed up or the flag is a serious one. If yours is past two days with no change, that is not a normal review anymore and you should appeal or repost a clean version.

Will my video still get views while it is under review?
No, or close to it. The video is held back from the For You feed while moderation looks at it, so views and the counter can freeze. Once it clears, distribution starts over from a cold start, which is why a video that was stuck often underperforms even after it gets approved.

Does deleting and reposting a video under review help?
Sometimes, but only if you actually changed what got flagged. If you repost the exact same file, it usually gets flagged the exact same way, and repeat flags on the same account are worse than one video sitting in a queue. Fix the caption, swap the audio, cut the risky frame, then repost.

Why do all my videos go under review now?
That is an account level thing, not a video thing. It usually means you have picked up strikes, or something about the account looks off to TikTok, like a recent login from a new country, a batch of rapid posts, or an appeal you lost. Check your account status in the app and slow down your posting for a week or two.

Can I appeal a TikTok video that was removed after review?
Yes. Open the video, tap the notification or the removal notice, and hit appeal. Appeals get looked at, and they do get reversed, so it is worth the thirty seconds. Just do not fire off five appeals in a day hoping one sticks, because that gets you nowhere.
