To recover a deleted Instagram post, open the Instagram app and go to Profile, Menu, Your activity, Recently deleted. Select the post, open Options, and tap Restore twice. You can only recover content that's still available there.
Before you upload a replacement, check that folder. For a business account, the missing post might be something customers are still asking about, and you'll want to know what happened to the original before making another version.
Where do I find Recently deleted on Instagram?
Use the account that originally published the content. In Your activity, look under Removed and archived content. Once you open Recently deleted, choose the content type at the top, then open the item you want back. Make sure you're choosing Restore, not Delete.
Instagram's official recovery instructions recommend using the latest app version. The feature isn't available on computers. If you haven't deleted anything recently, some options may not appear.
If you're managing several accounts, look at the username before going further. Checking the wrong business profile can make it seem like a post has disappeared from every recovery screen. And if someone else helps with publishing, ask what they changed. "I took it down" could mean they deleted it or moved it into the archive.
How long can I recover a deleted Instagram post?
Instagram's deleted-content policy gives most content 30 days in Recently deleted. Stories that aren't in your Stories archive have a shorter window of up to 24 hours. The clock starts when you delete the content.
Check now instead of leaving it for your next content day.
The same policy says completing deletion from Instagram's systems may take up to 90 days, with some backup copies retained longer. That doesn't extend the recovery window you get in the app. Treat the deadline shown for your item as urgent, even if you've read somewhere that Meta keeps backups.
What if I archived the post instead of deleting it?
Check Archive from your profile menu. Change the selection at the top to Posts archive, open the post, then use Options and Show on profile. Instagram says an unarchived post returns to its original place on your profile in its archive restoration instructions.
So don't judge success by looking only at the newest square in your grid. Find the spot where the original post belonged.
For a business, this is a useful distinction to make before cleaning up old content. If you just want an older post out of public view while you review it, consider archiving. If the post exposes something private or has another serious problem, deal with that problem directly instead of automatically bringing it back.
Why is my post missing from Recently deleted?
Start with the recovery window and the archive checks above. Then work out what happened before it disappeared. Was the post ever visible on your profile? Did someone on your team remove it? Did Instagram send a notice about it?
A post Instagram removed calls for a different check. Read the notice and use the support or appeal options offered for that decision. Meta's account support guidance describes tools for checking why content was taken down and following available appeal options. Don't assume the recovery folder handles every kind of removal.
If the whole account is inaccessible, start with our guide to what to do when your Instagram account is disabled. You need account access before a missing-post checklist can help.
What can I do if the recovery window has passed?
Look for an original file you already control. Check the phone you used to shoot it, your business's shared media folder, or the person who edited the video. If you saved a copy elsewhere, you may be able to publish that file again as a new post. That doesn't bring back the original post.
Before reposting, read the caption as if a customer will see it today. An expired offer or an old booking link can create a new problem while you're trying to fix the missing content. Keep a separate copy of the finished media and approved caption going forward so one account isn't your only record of the work.
What should I check after the post is restored?
Open it from your profile and check the content. If you shared its link in an email or on another page, test that link too. Tell anyone else who manages the account that the post is back so they don't publish the replacement they were preparing.
Then decide who can remove posts and where your team keeps the originals. A short note in the content calendar can save a lot of guessing next time. If maintaining that calendar keeps getting pushed aside, our social media marketing services for local businesses can help with a consistent publishing process.
