Why Do My Facebook Comments Keep Disappearing?

Short answer: they're almost never deleted. Facebook hid them. Between comment ranking, your page's own moderation filters, and Meta's automated spam detection, a comment can vanish from your view while the person who wrote it still sees it sitting right there on the post. That last part is what causes the arguments.

I get this call a few times a month from business owners who think somebody on their team is nuking comments. Usually nobody touched anything. Here's how to tell which one is happening to you.

Are the comments actually gone, or just hidden?

Hiding and deleting look identical from your side of the screen. They're not the same thing at all.

A deleted comment is gone for everybody. A hidden comment stays fully visible to the person who wrote it and to their friends, and it disappears for everyone else. Facebook sends no notification when a comment gets hidden, which is the whole point of the feature. Nobody gets mad, nobody knows.

So when a customer messages you asking why you deleted their question, and you can see with your own eyes that you didn't, they're probably looking at a hidden comment. It's still on their screen. It just isn't on anyone else's.

Why does Facebook hide comments on my business page?

Four things cause most of it.

Comment ranking. This is the big one and it's not moderation at all. Facebook defaults the comment section to "Most relevant," which surfaces comments from friends, verified accounts, and anything with replies or reactions on it. Everything else gets collapsed under a "View more comments" link that most people never click. Your comments didn't go anywhere. They got buried by a sorting choice you didn't make.

Your own moderation settings. Every business page has a profanity filter and a hidden words list, and a lot of owners turned those on years ago and forgot. If somebody typed a word on your blocklist, or Meta's built in profanity filter caught something, that comment got auto hidden without telling you. Moderation Assist adds another layer on top of that, with rules you can set for links, new accounts, and keywords. You can load up to a thousand keywords in there. It's easy to be more aggressive than you meant to be.

Meta's spam detection. Comments with links, phone numbers, all caps, or a bunch of repeat text tend to get flagged automatically. Same with comments from accounts that were just created. This one catches a lot of legitimate customers who paste their number in a comment asking for a quote.

The person deleted it themselves, or their account got restricted. If somebody's account gets disabled or restricted, their comments come down with it across the whole platform. That looks exactly like you removed them.

How do I see hidden comments on my page?

Open the post on desktop and find the sort dropdown at the top of the comment section. Switch it from "Most relevant" to "All comments." Do this first, before you go digging through settings, because nine times out of ten the comments show right back up and you're done.

If they're still missing, go into your page's Professional dashboard and look at Moderation Assist under your tools. That shows you what rules are running. Then check Settings, Privacy, Public Posts, and scroll to the content moderation section for the profanity filter and your blocked words list. Read that list. I've seen pages with words on there that somebody added during a bad week in 2019.

One more thing worth checking: your page's blocked people list. A blocked profile can't interact with your page normally, and anything they already posted stops showing up.

Why do comments disappear on my ads but not my regular posts?

Ad comments run through heavier automated filtering. Meta is protecting the ad experience, so links and anything that pattern matches a scam get pulled faster on a boosted post than on an organic one.

There's also a quirk that trips people up constantly. When you boost a post or run the same creative across multiple ad sets, the comments live on separate ad copies. You'll be looking at one version of the post and someone else is looking at another, with a completely different comment thread. Nothing was hidden. You're just on different copies of the same ad.

What if my own comments are the ones disappearing?

If you're commenting from your personal profile on other pages and your comments keep vanishing, that's a different problem. Usually it means you tripped a spam signal, most often by posting the same comment on a bunch of posts, dropping links, or commenting fast in a short window. That gets you a temporary action block, and comments you post during it may not stick.

Slow down for a few days and stop pasting the same text. It clears on its own. And if you're doing this as outreach for your business, comment as your page and write something different every time, because copy and paste comments are exactly what the filter is built to catch.

How do I keep it from happening again?

Go through your blocked words list and cut it down to words you'd actually want gone. Most pages are filtering things that never hurt anybody.

Set Moderation Assist to hide the stuff that's genuinely a problem, like comments with links from brand new accounts, and leave everything else alone. Then check your hidden comments folder once a week. Real customers end up in there, and a hidden question from somebody ready to buy is a lead you paid for and never saw.

Does Facebook notify someone when you hide their comment?
No. Hiding is silent. The comment stays visible to the person who wrote it and to their friends, and it disappears for everyone else. That is why people sometimes insist their comment is still there when you cannot see it.

What is the difference between hiding and deleting a Facebook comment?
A deleted comment is removed for everybody, including the person who wrote it. A hidden comment only disappears for the public while the author still sees it on the post. Hiding is usually the better move because it avoids a fight.

Why can I only see a few comments on my own post?
Facebook sorts comments by Most relevant by default, which collapses a lot of them behind a View more comments link. Switch the sort dropdown to All comments and the rest will show up.

Can I turn off Facebook's automatic comment filtering?
You can turn off the profanity filter and clear your blocked words list in your page settings under Privacy and Public Posts, and you can shut off Moderation Assist rules in your Professional dashboard. You cannot turn off Meta's own platform level spam detection.

Why do comments disappear from my boosted posts?
Ads get filtered more aggressively than organic posts, especially anything with a link or a phone number in it. Boosted posts and multiple ad sets can also create separate copies of the same post, each with its own comment thread, so a comment on one copy will not appear on another.
