Short answer: if you can't go live on TikTok, it's almost always one of four things. You have fewer than 1,000 followers, the account holder isn't 18 or older, your account has a LIVE restriction from a guidelines violation, or your app is out of date. Check them in that order and you'll find it.

I get this one from local business owners a lot. They set up a TikTok, post a few videos, want to do a live walkthrough of the shop or a Q&A, and the button just isn't there. Nothing's broken. TikTok gates LIVE on purpose. Here's how to figure out which gate you're stuck behind.

How many followers do you need to go live on TikTok?

In the US it's generally 1,000 followers. That's the one that trips up most small businesses, because a new account can take a while to get there.

TikTok has said this threshold can vary by region, and it's been tested and tweaked over the years. So if you're sitting at 1,050 followers and still don't have it, don't assume the number is the problem. Keep going down the list.

One more thing. If you hover right around 1,000 and lose a few followers, the option can disappear until you climb back over. People think it's a bug. It isn't.

Do you have to be 18 to go live on TikTok?

Yes. You have to be 18 or older to host a LIVE. TikTok goes by the birthday on the account.

This bites businesses more than you'd think. Somebody's nephew set up the account years ago with his own birthday, or someone typed a fake date just to get through signup. If the account's birthdate says under 18, LIVE won't show up no matter how many followers you have. If the date is wrong, TikTok may ask for age verification to fix it, so it's worth sorting out now rather than the day of your big live event.

Is your account restricted from going live?

This is the sneaky one. If a past video or LIVE got flagged for breaking Community Guidelines, TikTok can pull LIVE access for a while even though everything else on the account looks normal.

Go to your profile, tap the three lines, then Settings and privacy, then Account status (on some versions it's under Account, or in Support). That page shows any active violations and restrictions and when they expire. Short LIVE restrictions often clear in a day to a week. Repeat stuff can last a lot longer.

If you think a strike was wrong, you can appeal it right from that screen. Appeals do get overturned sometimes, especially for music or "unoriginal content" flags on a business that was just filming its own work.

What if you meet every requirement and still don't see LIVE?

Then it's usually the app. Try these, in this order:

If none of that works, report it inside the app under Settings and privacy, then Report a problem. It's slow, but it goes to the right people.

Can a business account go live on TikTok?

Yes. A TikTok business account can go live under the same rules: enough followers, an 18+ account holder, and no active restrictions. Switching between a personal and business account doesn't magically turn LIVE on or off on its own.

What a business account does limit is music. Business accounts only get the commercial music library, so if you play popular songs in the background of your LIVE, you can get muted or flagged. Keep the radio off in the shop while you're streaming.

How do you get to 1,000 followers faster?

For most local businesses, this is the real answer to the question. Most of the time the real hold up is the follower count.

Post short videos consistently. Show the work, show the people, answer the questions customers ask you at the counter every day. Behind-the-scenes stuff almost always outperforms polished ads for a local shop. And in the meantime, you can still join another creator's LIVE as a guest if they invite you, which is a decent way to get in front of their audience.
